Varna Koota Meaning – The 1-Point Koota in Ashtakoot Gun Milan Explained
By the Astrojanta team ·
When a pandit or an online kundli milan report gives you a score out of 36, the very first row of the table is usually Varna. It carries just 1 gun, so many families skip past it, but it often raises questions: "Varna 0 aaya hai, kya yeh problem hai?" or "Varna ka caste se kya lena-dena hai?" This guide explains the Varna koota meaning in simple language, the rashi-wise varna chart, exactly how the point is scored, how much weight it really carries, and where it sits among the eight kootas of Ashtakoot gun milan. To see your own Varna score, run a free kundli matching for both partners.
What is Varna koota?
Varna koota (वर्ण कूट) is the first of the eight kootas in Ashtakoot milan, the gun milan system used across North and Central India. It compares the varna of the bride's and groom's Moon signs (rashi) and is worth a maximum of 1 gun out of 36. Traditionally it is read as a check of spiritual temperament, ego and outlook on work and duty: whether the two people approach life with a similar inner nature, and whether the household will have a natural balance of leadership.
It is important to be clear about one thing: in kundli milan, varna is decided by the Moon sign in the birth chart, not by a person's caste or family background. Two people from the same community can have different varnas in their charts, and two people from very different backgrounds can have the same one. Varna koota is a symbolic grouping of the twelve rashis, not a social rule.
Rashi-wise varna chart
The twelve rashis are grouped into four varnas, three rashis each. The grouping follows the element (tattva) of the sign: water signs are Brahmin, fire signs Kshatriya, earth signs Vaishya and air signs Shudra.
| Varna | Rashis (Moon signs) | Element | Traditional nature |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brahmin (highest rank) | Karka (Cancer), Vrishchika (Scorpio), Meena (Pisces) | Water (jal) | Learning, spirituality, guidance |
| Kshatriya | Mesha (Aries), Simha (Leo), Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Fire (agni) | Courage, leadership, protection |
| Vaishya | Vrishabha (Taurus), Kanya (Virgo), Makara (Capricorn) | Earth (prithvi) | Trade, practicality, building wealth |
| Shudra | Mithuna (Gemini), Tula (Libra), Kumbha (Aquarius) | Air (vayu) | Service, skill, cooperation |
Remember that this uses your Vedic (sidereal) Moon sign, which is often different from the sun sign used in Western horoscopes. If you are not sure of your rashi, find it in seconds with the free Moon sign and Nakshatra finder or by making a free Janam Kundli.
How Varna koota is scored
The rule is simple and is the same in most North Indian panchangs and software. The varnas are ranked in the order Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya, Shudra, and the groom's varna is compared with the bride's:
- 1 gun: the groom's varna is the same as, or higher than, the bride's varna.
- 0 gun: the bride's varna is higher than the groom's varna.
| Groom's Moon sign | Bride's Moon sign | Varna score |
|---|---|---|
| Simha (Kshatriya) | Dhanu (Kshatriya) | 1 – same varna |
| Karka (Brahmin) | Kanya (Vaishya) | 1 – groom's varna higher |
| Makara (Vaishya) | Mesha (Kshatriya) | 0 – bride's varna higher |
| Tula (Shudra) | Meena (Brahmin) | 0 – bride's varna higher |
The logic comes from the traditional household model in classical texts, where the husband was expected to lead the family's duties. Many modern astrologers read it more neutrally: a score of 1 suggests the two outlooks sit comfortably together, while 0 suggests one partner may feel more driven by ideals or ego than the other, which simply needs mutual respect.
Is Varna 0 a problem? How much does it matter?
Varna is the lightest koota in the 36-gun system. Losing it reduces the total by just 1 point, and there is no Varna "dosha" that astrologers treat with the seriousness of Nadi dosha (8 points) or Bhakoot dosha (7 points). A match with Varna 0 but strong Graha Maitri, Gana, Bhakoot and Nadi is generally considered far better than a match with Varna 1 and Nadi dosha.
So if your report shows "Varna: 0/1", there is no need to worry on that basis alone. Look at the total score, the higher-value kootas, and each partner's individual chart: the 7th house, Venus, the running dasha and Manglik dosha. Our Manglik dosha meaning guide explains why that check is done separately from the 36 gun.
All 8 kootas of Ashtakoot gun milan at a glance
Varna is one of eight kootas. Together they add up to 36 gun, and the higher the number, the more weight the koota carries:
| Koota | Max gun | What it checks | Based on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | Spiritual temperament and ego | Moon sign |
| Vashya | 2 | Mutual attraction and influence | Moon sign |
| Tara | 3 | Health, wellbeing and fortune (birth star compatibility) | Nakshatra |
| Yoni | 4 | Physical and intimate compatibility | Nakshatra |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | Mental compatibility and friendship of rashi lords | Moon sign |
| Gana | 6 | Temperament: Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa | Nakshatra |
| Bhakoot | 7 | Family welfare, finances and emotional bond | Moon sign |
| Nadi | 8 | Health and progeny | Nakshatra |
Traditionally, 18 out of 36 is the minimum generally accepted for marriage, 18 to 24 is average, 25 to 32 is very good and above 32 is excellent. For a full walkthrough of every koota, Nadi and Bhakoot dosha and how families read the score, see our kundli milan online free guide.
Lagna kundli milan vs Moon-based gun milan
Ashtakoot gun milan, including Varna, is calculated only from the Moon sign and nakshatra. That is why a matching tool can give you a score even if the birth time is not known exactly. But the Moon is only one part of the chart. Many astrologers therefore also do what is often called lagna kundli milan: comparing the two Lagna (ascendant) charts, the 7th house and its lord, Venus for the groom and Jupiter for the bride, and the dashas each person will run in the early years of marriage. Lagna-based matching needs accurate birth times, because the Lagna changes roughly every two hours.
A practical approach is to use both: the gun milan score as a first screening, and the Lagna charts for a deeper reading. You can generate both partners' charts with the free kundli tool and then ask the AI astrologer to compare the 7th houses and dashas in Hindi or English.
Jataka matching and South Indian porutham
In Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, horoscope matching is often called jataka matching or jathaka porutham, from the Sanskrit jataka (birth chart). Instead of Ashtakoot, families usually use the Dasha Porutham system of ten poruthams (matches) such as Dina, Gana, Mahendra, Stree Deergha, Yoni, Rasi, Rasi Adhipathi, Vasya, Rajju and Vedha. Most of them are based on the birth star (nakshatra), and Rajju is given special importance. Varna in the Ashtakoot sense is not one of the ten poruthams.
Both systems aim at the same question — will these two people live well together? — and both are best read together with the individual birth charts rather than as a single pass-or-fail number.
How to check your Varna koota online
- Collect both partners' date, time and place of birth. In India, use the IST time from the birth certificate; for births abroad, use the local time.
- Run the free kundli matching tool. It shows the Varna score along with all eight kootas and the total out of 36.
- Check each partner's Manglik status, since it is not part of the 36 gun.
- For a deeper reading, open both Kundlis and compare the Lagna, 7th house and dashas, or ask the AI astrologer, for example: "Hamara Varna 0 hai, kya isse koi dikkat hogi?"

Frequently asked questions
What is Varna koota in kundli milan?
Varna koota is the first of the eight kootas in Ashtakoot gun milan. It compares the varna (Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya or Shudra) of the bride's and groom's Moon signs and is worth 1 gun out of 36.
How many points is Varna koota worth?
Varna koota carries a maximum of 1 gun. It is the lowest-weighted of the eight kootas, which together total 36 gun.
How is Varna koota scored?
The groom gets 1 gun when his Moon sign's varna is the same as or higher than the bride's, in the order Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya, Shudra. If the bride's varna is higher, the score is 0.
Which rashi belongs to which varna?
Brahmin: Karka, Vrishchika and Meena. Kshatriya: Mesha, Simha and Dhanu. Vaishya: Vrishabha, Kanya and Makara. Shudra: Mithuna, Tula and Kumbha. The varna is taken from the Vedic Moon sign.
Is Varna koota related to caste?
No. In kundli milan, varna is a symbolic grouping of Moon signs by element. It is decided by the birth chart, not by a person's caste or family.
Is Varna 0 out of 1 bad for marriage?
Not on its own. It lowers the total by only 1 gun, and astrologers give much more weight to Bhakoot, Nadi, Gana and Graha Maitri, as well as the individual charts and Manglik status.
What is the difference between gun milan and lagna kundli milan?
Gun milan uses only the Moon sign and nakshatra to give a score out of 36. Lagna kundli milan compares the ascendant charts, 7th house, Venus, Jupiter and dashas, and needs accurate birth times.
What is jataka matching?
Jataka matching (jathaka porutham) is the South Indian name for horoscope matching. It usually uses the ten-porutham system, which is based mostly on the birth nakshatra, instead of the 36-gun Ashtakoot system.
